Upbeat music is great all year round, but it becomes extra special when the atmosphere around it matches. Right now it’s hotter than the sun and I am sweating just a little bit (hi ladies) and it’s great, all because I am listening to Holding Me Up, the debut single by Delphina Kings.

You Are Number Six (or YANS) are a duo from France and this is their new EP VHS Dreams. These guys perform a kind of electronic music that brings a lot of everything going on from the 80’s into the modern day, and gets it sounding as glitchy as possible to really ramp up its gothic appeal. It’s very intriguing, and I’m particularly glad they’re on Tree Machine Records.

You know, the UK’s been a bit shit lately. Recently we held a vote to decide whether or not we should remain within the EU which saw Leave just scrape victory. This was a referendum coming from the minds of people who immediately said that £350 million going to the NHS – the main statement behind the push to leave – was a “mistake” the next day, and wasn’t going to happen at all. This is then followed by said people stepping down from their roles in Politics, and now we’ve ended up with a new PM and the nation’s brightest hope, Jeremy Corbyn, constantly battling against people of his own party wanting him out. Mental.

M+A are an Italian duo and this is their new single Everything Will Be Alright. I became a huge fan of these guys after hearing the wonderful Anyway Milkyway EP last year, which featured some of my favourite summery tracks in ‘Do the Shout’ and ‘Habes’. If you haven’t heard M+A’s material before I would highly recommend you check out that EP, it’s seriously good.

Last year EHS hosted the #MovementMovement, a week long dedication to local acts from around Essex and London. A new act was bigged up on the website each day, and it was pretty awesome – easily one of my favourite things I’ve ever done as a music writer. One of the artists talked about was Bara Blaque, a London rapper who was part of The Koup, which is also the home of today’s artist: Tosin Kuti. Last July I reviewed his track ‘The Non Conscious Theory’ and was pleasantly surprised, and am equally pleased by the new single ‘Double Deez’.

So glad to bring this back! An Interview With is a series which I would love to bring to EHS a lot more, but due to having a proper job that isn’t involved in music takes up a lot of time (and I’ve recently started a long term save as Manager of Chelmsford City in Football Manager 2016, but less said about that the better [I’m doing really well, currently 4th in the league]) so I’m unable to get out there to do my thang properly. HOWEVER, the latest interview comes from fellow Essex band The Penny Antics who I raved about not too long ago because of their solid new single ‘Guilty Pleasures’. Huge thanks to Lewis from The Penny Antics for taking the time to answer these questions, and also a big thanks to you for reading. Much love to you all.

It’s been a little while since I’ve been to the Dentist. I used to go every 6 months thanks to Mummy’s persistence and hated it, though nowadays I have a kink for people sticking Latex gloves in my unwilling mouth. So it’s swings and roundabouts. Anyway, Shark Dentist are an emerging act from North London and this is their second single called ‘Florentine (Make Me Smile)’ and it’s pretty darn good. It’s certainly good enough to put a smile on your face. Continue reading “Hot New Bands / #7 / Shark Dentist”
