Flattery is the best way to anybody’s heart. Whether it is simply saying that somebody looks nice today (you do look nice today) to scouting out their house numerous times over the course of the past 3 months while they sleep any nice gesture can go a long way. This might be the biggest case right here as The Strzebonksy Noizescene have immediately become my new best friends. Their new album is called Exploding Head Syndrome and it is clear that they got their name from this wonderful music blog. I had no idea we were so big in Belgium, thanks guys. It came out way back in May but for this case and for the sake of making a joke about being big in Belgium I thought I’d make an exception. These guys are a two piece from Belgium who dabble in performing simply with a bass and drums, so they are Belgium’s answer to Royal Blood and Death From Above 1975, and they sound freaking awesome man.
Much like the aforementioned bands, The Strzebonksy Noizescene deliver riffs that are thick and heavy with distorted goodness and pair them up alongside drum beats that do not know how to quit. Opening track Enjoy The Fall kicks things off with an intense riff that sounds extremely close to bursting, like a really jagged blueberry or something. In amongst the heaviness is an underlying sense of groove however as the duo allow the bass and the drums to knock their heads together to lay down some rhythms that sound pretty darn danceable actually.
This can also be said for rest of the record as the likes of Go Big Go Down and Exploding Head go even further into the darkness to discover some extra dancemoves. The riffs go all out on both these tracks, and The Strzebonksy Noizescene make sure that they sound just as intense with additional noises thrown in for good measure. It sounds exactly how I perceive a Belgian noisescene to be – a heavy night of compressed distorted music, a lot of pills, and a lot of people flailing themselves all over the place. Like a sweaty but sexy collision of flesh. Mmm-mmm.
Exploding Head Syndrome is a great album from The Strzebonksy Noizescene. These guys have delivered something that’s gritty and full of anger but constantly give it time to cool down to bust out some sweet grooves throughout. It’s like a moshpit at a LCD Soundsystem gig – the people are really passionate about dancing. Great record from these guys, they’ve certainly done the name proud.
