Word On The Street by Dany Laj and the Looks | Album Review

WHEN: 05.05.2015
WHERE: Squirtgun Records
LOVE.LIKE.ALRIGHT: LOVE

Okay, I’m ever so slightly freaking out over this record. Dany Laj and the Looks are a three piece from Ontario, Canada and this is their debut album Word on the Street. Many, many years ago I actually featured their EP Telepathic Voices on our previous blog Elusive Little Comments that included a link to their badass Chamberlain Sessions, which to this day remains my favourite video of all time.

The first thing to notice is that the album features some songs that the band had in their arsenal way back in 2012. I Know You Want Out is a power pop classic complete with fast-paced guitar riffs, frantic delivery of melodies and even three years later it still hits HARD as the band still perform it with as much gusto and intensity as they did way back when. Mr. Rebound is another catchy number complete with quick bursts of riffage followed by excellent vocal performances, and immediately my mood is restored.

All fangirling aside, the rest of the album feature songs that are also pretty darn good too. We Know features a much more psychedelic vibe to its riffs and sounds, adding a little touch of variety into the mix while also maintaining the band’s priority to BLOW YOUR DICK APART WITH RIFFS. Variety increases tenfold with Where’s The Love delivering some reggae sounds which is nothing short of excellent, and another old cut in Killing The Pleasure delivers some pretty badass western vibes too.

Word On The Street is a fantastic debut from a band who have been working tirelessly for many years. It’s an album that can lift the mood of even the most glum people and it does so by delivering a constant supply of upbeat music that’s full of harmonies, melodies, rhythms that sound fantastic and just the overall feeling that hey, the world is a good place. I love this album, and I’m so happy that Dany Laj and the Looks have finally been signed to a label. Nice work guys.
