Track Review | Kendrick Lamar – King Kunta

WHEN: 13.03.2015
WHERE: Top Dawg Entertainment

Ohhhh boy what a wonderful month March is gonna be. Kendrick Lamar dropped a very lovely unexpected treat on Instagram of what seemed to be an album cover alongside a quote that personally made me pee a little bit at work. It was then revealed that the picture was indeed the album cover of Kendrick’s new album To Pimp A Butterfly, and now there’s another track released too, King Kunta.

This is some funky sounding shit. Kendrick lays down a real good groove using his flow to meander inbetween the silky smooth bassline, and the accompanying drum beat is simple but adds some extra texture to this danceable jam too. There’s percussion thrown in, old school sounding female backing vocals and man, this track sounds straight from the heyday of the 90’s. There’s always something going on, and of course Kendrick’s lyrics add a lot of story and depth which I’m sure will mean much more once the album is out and we’re able to listen to the whole thing.

Honestly I am extremely excited for To Pimp A Butterfly much like every single other person in the world is too. With this slightly funkier sound it seems we might get a bit more of a catchier listen than good kid, m.A.A.d city but I’m sure it will be projecting a story that’s just as hard hitting. It’s looking to be album of the year, and I cannot wait to finally hear it. Stream King Kunta below, and look out for To Pimp A Butterfly on March 23rd. EDIT: As you can see I did not anticipate an early release, but nevermind. Love you.
